When you think of the guitar and Uruguay, what comes to mind? If it is astonishing feats of radical technique and conceptual originality in the hands of Mauricio Galeano, you wouldn’t be far wrong.

As one of the composers on Colloid, this album of eruditely individualistic challenges for the most common of instruments, Ray Evanoff states:
“…the collection of works such as here in Colloid screams vibrating liminal physical achievement. What must it be like to dance, cartwheel, flex, contort, teleport across the strings? A vivifying direct experience of being alive. It is not just body. Colloid is an imagination playspace where inflections of the hand, shifts in pressure, angle, oscillations all accumulate, bear weight, speak, evidencing linguistically-inarticulable inner workings.”

Four European composers and one American – all beacons of the so-called New Complexity movement – are featured here: Ray Evanoff, Brian Ferneyhough, Klaus Karl Hübler, Wieland Hoban and Richard Barrett. And the collection and performance of them are as much a compositional act as the pieces themselves:

“This is no composer-portrait album, none of the pieces were written for me, all of them have already been performed several times by several performers, some of them have already been recorded more than once. But it is in the conjunction of these works and my playing that I found a possibility of creating a mode of listening, a mode of creating meaning out of disparate elements disparate pieces each with its own sound world. The self-similarity, the long, the short, the rip, the tear off, the unbroken flux are all present here and mix with each other without ever dissolving.

If it makes any sense, it was my wish that the album’s content would focus not only on every piece’s detail and every detail’s detail but also that it wouldn’t overlook the whole.” – MG.

Mauricio Galeano (b. 1991) is a musician from Uruguay, currently based in Leipzig, Germany. He studied guitar in his home country at the Escuela Universitaria de Música. Further studies followed with Magnus Andersson in Sweden, and with Jürgen Ruck at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg, Germany.

He has performed internationally in Europe and South America, taking part in various festivals and concert series, collaborating as well with teaching institutions.

He is a member of the Leipzig-based ensemble Contemporary Insights with whom he also collaborates in the artistic direction.
